Google Play has started letting users search for apps and games by uploading or selecting a photo, matching the image against app screenshots, icons and in-store creative rather than a typed query. For product teams, that’s a new acquisition surface with no keyword attached to it — which is a problem, because almost every ASO and attribution pipeline built over the last decade assumes the install funnel starts with a search term. A user finds your icon because it visually resembles a photo they uploaded, taps through, installs, and every downstream report that groups traffic by “search query” has nowhere to put that session.
The risk isn’t that visual search is large yet — it isn’t. It’s that teams won’t notice it exists in their numbers until “direct” or “unknown” traffic quietly grows and nobody can explain why, because the install genuinely didn’t originate from a keyword, a referrer URL, or a campaign click that any existing tracker was built to catch.
Data Points to Track
- Referrer/traffic-source breakdown by store surface (search-by-text vs. search-by-image vs. browse/category), pulled from whatever the Play Console API exposes at the install-referrer level
- “Unattributed” or “organic-unknown” install share over time, watched as a leading indicator that a new discovery surface is absorbing volume your funnel can’t classify
- Which store assets (icon, screenshots, feature graphic) are actually being matched, if Play Console or Search Console surfaces any visual-match reporting
- Conversion rate for visual-search-originated sessions vs. text-search sessions, once they can be isolated at all
- Screenshot/icon change history, cross-referenced against any shift in unattributed install volume, since visual search attribution depends entirely on your creative assets rather than your copy
Setup Steps
- Pull install-referrer data at the finest grain the Play Console API currently exposes, and flag any traffic bucket that doesn’t cleanly map to an existing keyword or campaign.
- Tag a baseline “unknown organic” rate today, before assuming any future increase in unattributed installs is a tracking bug rather than a genuine new surface.
- Version your store screenshots and icon assets with dates, the same way you’d version a landing page, so a later spike in unattributed traffic can be checked against a specific creative change.
- Add a manual monthly check in Play Console’s own discovery-surface breakdown (where available) rather than trusting third-party MMP dashboards to have caught up with a store-native feature.
- Brief whoever owns ASO copy that keyword optimisation alone no longer accounts for every discovery path — screenshot and icon quality now double as a search input, not just a conversion lever.
Actionable Insights
A rising share of installs your funnel can’t tie to a keyword, a referrer, or a paid click isn’t automatically a broken pipeline — it may be users finding you by image instead of text. Before writing it off as “dark” organic traffic, check whether your creative assets changed recently and whether the timing lines up. Teams that keep attributing every unexplained install bucket to “brand search we’re not tracking properly” will misallocate ASO effort toward copy when the actual lever has quietly become the screenshot.
